Chapter 7

“Do you trust this human?” Elandra looked into Taro’s eyes, her own narrow with concern. “If he leads you astray…you’ll be all alone.”

“He has a vested interest in my success,” Taro replied. “Don’t forget, the humans are in just as much danger. We’re working together here and Jahdin strikes me as the type of man who will see his obligation through.”

“But in our time of need, you leaving…” Elandra shook her head. “I understand why you think this is the only way, I just wish…I wish there was an alternative. Perhaps I can come with you. My injuries are not so bad…”

Taro smiled. “The healers told me otherwise, my dear. I appreciate the offer and would take you up on it if I could but you must mend. When I return, I’ll need you more than ever before. We’ll be responsible for the safety of entire world and I don’t want to shoulder the burden alone. If you’ll carry it with me, I’d be grateful.”

“You don’t even have to ask.” Elandra took his hand and squeezed it. “Go. Before I lose my dragon reserve and cry or do something equally silly.”

Taro kissed her, gently at first but a fierce passion took them both. When he drew back, his cheeks burned and he fought for breath. Elandra’s eyes were wide, her expression serious. They remained silent and close for some time before he finally broke the tension with a smile. It made her laugh.

“You certainly know how to give a man something to come home to,” Taro said.

“And I hope you’ll always remember what waits for you.” Elandra settled back in the bed. “Until you return…”

“I love you.” Taro swallowed hard.

“I love you, too.” Elandra motioned with her head. “Now go before we soak up another hour together.”

Taro grudgingly went for the door and hurried down the hall. Part of him knew the longer he stayed, the harder leaving would be. When he reached the courtyard, Jahdin waited with a pack slung over his shoulder. One of the servants brought Taro a massive bag and set it down beside him, bowed and paced back.

“That looks heavy,” Jahdin said. “Are we ready to go?”

“How far is this place we’re going?” Taro asked.

“I’d say we can ride there in three or four days if we push hard.” Jahdin shrugged. “Faster if we didn’t have to go through some difficult terrain.”

“Overland.” Taro shook his head. “We’ll be taking…a somewhat simpler path.”

Jahdin’s brows raised. “You’re talking about…”

Taro smiled and morphed into his dragon form, stretching his wings out and arching his back. When he acclimated, he gripped his bag with a massive talon and turned to Jahdin, who stared at him with a slack jawed, shocked expression. The older man seemed frozen as he took in the dragon but regained his composure quickly.

Awe took his voice as he said, “I’ve never seen someone do that before.”

“Then I’m pleased to have given the advisor a new experience,” Taro grumbled. He lowered his head. “Climb on. I believe you’ll find there’s plenty of room.
